The Entitled Middle Class Princess Syndrome

In a post-modern society characterized by low fertility and few kids per family, each parent acts as a kind and all-forgiving Dhritarashtra thus giving rise to an army of modern Duryodhanas. Bad behaviour is not only tolerated but in many cases encouraged by modern parents. Each kid is sold the story of being a special snowflake where the whole world is supposed to rotate around them. Thus begins the story of entitlement syndrome which follows Gen X from childhood to youth. Unfortunately, the world bites young boys hard and punctures their ego balloon once they grow up, where they are supposed to perform or perish. On the other hand their sisters turn out to be pretty lucky and their snowflake image only grows over time — which we will refer to as the Entitled Middle Class Princess (EMP) syndrome.

What makes middle class girls special is that not only are they treated like princesses by their family members but are fed the constant victimhood narrative associated with being a girl in a third world country like India. The only difference is that unlike their poor sisters they hardly face any hardships and live a life of luxury supported by their parents. The protected environment provided by the family ensures that most of their wishes are fulfilled with little to no effort. This point can be confirmed by the praise that most of these middle class girls have for their fathers — specially on how they care for them. Also, as mentioned above, unlike men who still have to go and face the heat of the bad real world, middle class girls get a free pass even in social life from school to college to work, where all efforts are made to assuage their ego and mistakes are overlooked thanks to the political correctness regime and the gender card.

Finally, due to the system of arranged marriages and dowry, women still retain the right to work or not work after marriage, unlike men who have no choice but to be the breadwinner of the family. Just look around yourself to confirm that there are hardly any men who are jobless and have a good wife, while there are many young women who prefer to opt out of the workforce and still get married to a rich or powerful man. The use of the gender card to shrug off each failure while getting rewarded for the smallest accomplishments — both at home and in public life — generates extreme narcissism which these women then carry into their marriages, thus building extreme expectations that are impossible to be satisfied by future husbands. Given this EMP syndrome plus the tough anti-dowry laws, marriages are becoming a bad deal for middle class men, who have to pay a high cost in case they want to divorce one of these princesses.

    Case Study

Let’s look at one such case of Abhinandan, an upper middle class Hindu boy who married Shruti two years ago. All was going well for the 28-year-old orthopaedic surgeon before he agreed to marry the girl of his parents’ choice. The girl belonged to a political family with her father being a big shot in local politics. The marriage took place with the usual grandeur that defines current middle class marriages. The soft-spoken and friendly doctor knew that marriage would change his life completely but did not know that it would be the biggest mistake of his life.

The problem started soon after marriage due to Abhinandan’s devotion to his family, which was something that Shruti did not like. The more she tried to pull him away from his family the more he resisted it tooth and nail. The constant pestering by his wife led to constant but small friction between them in the beginning, which kept on growing over time. The issue finally escalated to the point where Shruti aborted their three-month-old foetus and blamed the guy and his family for beating her up and causing the abortion. The behaviour of Shruti was common knowledge for all friends and both families but in the end the girl’s parents decided to side with her. The final result was that the whole family was slapped with 498A on false accusations. To make things worse, Abhinandan’s younger sister — who was not even home — was blamed for forcing Shruti to abort the foetus. Given the mass abuse of 498A, it is not uncommon to hear such stories where entire families including women are punished to extract revenge.

You would think that it is just another story but given the image of Abhinandan, it has left a sour matrimonial taste among many of his friends and well-wishers to the point that many of them are considering not marrying at all, or not marrying middle class girls. If the trend continues, middle class working women would have a tough time getting married as a lot of men would start preferring poor women who don’t suffer from EMP. This trend is very similar to the one seen in western countries where white men are increasingly opting to marry Latino or Asian women who are not as narcissistic as their western counterparts. Similarly in India, poor girls have seen the hardships of real life and would appreciate the hard work of their spouses for their family instead of whining about patriarchy and oppression while watching TV and checking Facebook inside an air-conditioned house. Also, poor girls who have seen that real life is about compromises and not all wishes can be fulfilled are less likely to break marriages and slap divorce charges willy-nilly. Another factor in favour of poor women is that they are a lot more grounded in our culture and reality and actually love having children — which is a biological duty of the family — instead of whining about how difficult it is to have children and manage them.

All in all, if this trend continues, middle class women may find it increasingly difficult to find suitable grooms in the coming years. Of course, thanks to hypergamy, men and their families would have little problem with marrying below their social status, unlike girls or their families who would find it difficult to marry their daughters to someone they consider below their standards. You can ask around to confirm that it is already getting difficult for parents to marry off their highly successful daughters. If middle class girls and their families want to stem this trend and stop this rot, they need to do a serious introspection on whether pampering their kids is such a good idea — and if living alone with a cat like western women is better than adjusting to live with their husbands.

Finally, this is not a men vs women issue as it is the parents who are to be blamed for this mess in the first place. This is a problem faced by society as a whole, as the women reading this would quickly realize that they are likely to have a brother or son of their own to be affected by it in the future. Similarly, men who cherish their duty of being fathers and brothers should give it a good introspection as well. The west, having created permanent fault lines between men and women in their society, is now trying hard to replicate this problem in India — which has always valued Dharma over rights and cherished both men and women for their contribution to family and society as a whole.

There is a lot of buzz going on lately on why marital rape is evil and should be recognised on par with rape. But is there any merit to such a statement?

Why Marital rape is an oxymoron?

What is marriage? Marriage is the union of man and a woman in a society such that both pledge exclusivity of sexual relations to each other so that they can raise their kids in a stable environment. The exclusivity of sexual relationship is the reason why society views adultery as a crime and makes it punishable as a criminal offence, since it involves breaking of the exclusivity pledged in the marriage. So, marriage — by virtue of the exclusivity of sex it pledges to the marital partners — is implied consent for sex, since if such implied consent is not there, there is no meaning to the exclusivity of sexual relationship between husband and wife, as either one can deny sex to the other without any valid reason and deprive the other of a basic human need. So the very term marital rape is an oxymoron. Both cannot go hand in hand.

Legal implications of recognising marital rape

Marital rape law would be ripe for abuse just like the dowry law has been misused umpteen times without any significant reduction in demand for dowry. The current medical technologies cannot distinguish a rape and a rough sexual act reliably. Medical examination can only show that rough sex had taken place. So it is legally difficult to prove rape against rough sexual act. And in such cases, conviction of the accused (in this case husband) will depend only on the accounts of husband and wife on what happened. In such a case, any sexual act can be used by the wife to get revenge on her husband by falsely accusing him of rape, which could not be proven or disproven in court. So when evidence would be iffy at pinpointing rape or rough sex, there is high chance for the law to convict an innocent husband. While this is the problem now, if feminists and other women’s rights activists successfully manage to change the present “innocent until proven otherwise” law to “guilty until proven otherwise”, it will become a legal nightmare for India — with the husband needing to use a consent app or file written consent for every time the couple have sex, or risk losing his life over a false complaint. While such false complaints do exist now (to the tune of 53%), it won’t be as bad as the proposed law because unlike other cases of rape where the innocent man can prove his innocence by using medical tests, no such possibility is there for an accused of marital rape. In a country where 90% of the dowry cases are false and are used only for revenge and send families to ruin, it’s not really that hard to imagine the ruin this law will have on husbands and their families. And the usual argument made for recognising such a law is that women should be protected no matter how many men get destroyed in the process. It is a bit ironic and hypocritical that the ones who claim to be for equality of genders have no problem saying that a hundred innocent men can have their lives ruined so that a single woman can be saved from rape.

Societal implications of recognising marital rape

This is another issue which is often overlooked by the women’s rights campaigners and feminists who are pushing for recognising marital rape — the effect of such a law on family and society.

So what these people want us to believe is that recognising marital rape on par with other rapes is actually good for women and society as a whole. But is it really so? If marital rape is recognised, every husband has to be wary of being accused of rape by his wife and have to have written evidence of consent for sex. Not only will it reduce the bonding strength in the marriage, it will also make sure that neither of the couple will have enough trust which is needed for a marriage to work. So when such a law is recognised, it would result in the marital bond becoming loose and we will end up like western societies with 50% divorce rates and 50% fatherless children. Is it what our society should be aiming to achieve? A society of lonely kids and single mothers like in the west? And what exactly are the feminists hoping to achieve by this law, which is not possible under current laws? Do you think that if a wife accuses her husband of rape and sends him to prison for seven years, he will come back and live with her again? Seriously, which wife is going to accuse her husband of rape if she really wanted to live with him? Also, if there is such a complaint it will lead to dissolution of the marriage. So this law will only be useful for women getting divorce and then beating their husbands with another false complaint to extract revenge.

How effective will recognising marital rape be?

As per current law, forced sex with a spouse is a ground for divorce and so is withholding of sex. So a wife who does not want to have sex with her husband any more can file for divorce and after court-mandated separation cannot be forced into sex by her husband, as such an act would be considered rape under current law. So this law is not for wives who want to live with their husbands. This law can only help wives who are not going to live with their husbands — i.e. future divorcees. So this is a law for nobody as we already have divorce laws to achieve these goals.

So what exactly is marital rape law recognition going to do for the society? The benefits of such a law will be negligible compared to the massive downsides of such a law in society. Finally, almost everyone who is in this debate thinks that these laws are an issue of men vs women along the lines of Marxist class warfare. This is a hugely flawed reasoning. Men and women are not separate classes. Any law which punishes men for no reason will end up punishing women too. Today’s women who are pushing for marital rape to be recognised will not only bear sons or grandsons, but are also related to their fathers and brothers. Be careful what you wish for is a very apt description of this problem. The way current dowry laws punish not only innocent men but also an equal number of innocent women, a similar marital rape law would also be open for abuse. Under current laws, when a couple runs away from their families who are against their marriage, rape is the first charge brought against the boy by the girl under pressure from her family. Now imagine the hardships of this couple under marital rape law when the boy would not only be slapped with forced marriage but also forced rape by the girl’s family.

So it is not good enough to claim a false moral high ground and study everything from a class warfare perspective while ignoring the residual ill-effects on society. Also, such laws will hurt the sanctity of marriage as seen in Dharmic traditions and force men to completely opt out of marriage as an institution. We would then have to contend with our daughters and granddaughters being single moms and lonely crazy cat ladies as in the west. We should try to preserve our superior social and cultural fabric instead of blindly aping the broken marriages model of the west which has only led to misery and a crime-infested cesspool that is western society today.
